Final Porfolio

Budgeted time: 35 hours
-carrier: 15
-labels: 11
-branding ad: 8

Time I actually spent: 30 (a little under budget, but I spent probably the extra five hours telling everyone how awesome it was to be an art major because I had to drink beer for a project! Man our teachers are so cool!!)
-carrier: 13 (2 were spent mocking up...so many lines to cut out!!)
-labels: 9 (time spent complaining about how I almost chopped off my finger: all night haha I'm a brat!) and it took me an hour to paint the lids, and the labels didn't want to stay attached, I probably should have used thinner paper, but after I spent money printing, I didn't want to redo it...broke college student problems!
-branding ad: 8 (I played with merging layers in Photoshop for entirely too long..also, tracing that little flourish at the bottom too me for.ev.er)

Budgeted: 16 hours
Book Jacket: 4
CD/Audio Book Packaging: 10
iTunes/iBook Cover Art: 2

Actual: 18.5
Book Jacket: 6 (It took me so long to finally get something good, I think it was because it was earlier in the semester, so I wasn't feeling super creative or confident about my abilities yet, plus it's always hard to start on a fresh project)
CD/Audio Book Packaging: 11 (mockups took awhile on this one, and similar to the jacket, I had trouble getting the ball rolling and approved!)
iTunes/iBook Cover Art: 1.5

Budgeted: 9 hours

Actual: 11 hours (I had to chop up and prepare food, to photograph it..and then of course eat! but I just couldn't figure out the layout for the life of me. After harassing Rusty with this one every class period for a week and a half, I got my little red ok!)

Budgeted: 9 hours

Actual: 16 hours (It's funny to look back and see old versions of this..now it looks great and this is one of my favorites, but the layout was not working in my favor. It should have so obviously been set up like this in the first place, but I have a really big problem with hindsight and envisioning the way things will work out.. Five of the sixteen hours were spent trying to package this one to turn in as my two-color job. I eventually got defeated and used another one. There was a process black hidden somewhere in here. I quintuple checked, made Annie check, Google searched all sorts of crazy things, but could not find it...what did people do before Google?! It's probably some tiny weird stroke on one little letter or something, but I know a lot of cool new InDesign features now!)

Budgeted: 16 hours

Actual: 13 hours (I'm not sure why this type is here, not down there, but I'm not very good at this blog thing! Anywhozers, this project was a pain in my behind. I haven't taken Illustration yet, so I felt like I was kind of at a disadvantage. The most time consuming things were: illustrating, laying out the type, and packaging - oh and figuring out spot colors!)

Budgeted: 9 hours

Actual: 9 hours (Now see, why is this type down here, but Society of Illustrators was wonky? WhAtEvZ. Going crazi. I don't know why that cupcake picture keeps being lame, but I'm going to try and fix that! Similar to my How Safe? project, I couldn't envision the type. I finally looked to real magazines for layout inspirations. And of course eating the food and photographing it was SUPPPPPEEERRRR time consuming ;) [my major is super crazy] the food spreads were crazy. Wordy and then no words at all. Finally learning how to address all of the space, and I shouldn't be afraid of negative space.)

This is all stuff from pre-midterm, but they were my favorites. I didn't rework anything, but these were the ones I liked the best!:

Total Semester Budget: 290 hours (I think that's what it was...whatever the number, it was insanely high)

Actual: 251.5 (That seems way low, but since I cut HOW Design out so early and that was 30 hours.......I'm glad this semester is over! Now on to Stats studying.....SUMMER IS SO CLOSEEEEEEEEEE YOLO..)

Rejects

Not all projects were created equally..these didn't make the cut:

Budgeted: 22 hours

Actual: 20 hours (designing the little pepper guys was fun, but it was hard to incorporate three different little peppers, take three completely different pictures of peppers, and tie them all together. I really liked this one, but unfortunately it didn't come together quickly enough!)

Budgeted: 30 hours
Actual: 2 hours (Rusty is going to hate me for this one. I organized all the type on to separate pages, but I could not for the life of me figure out how to design each page. It took me three hours to sort through and figure out what needed to go on each page, but the design gods were not in my favor that week. I also couldn't figure out the technical aspect of how the printing would work or how it would all fit together, so I ruled this project out fairly early in the semester! Sorry Rusty, please don't fail me because of this!!!!)

Light at the end of the Tunnel

This is my branding ad. Regardless of whether or not he likes it, I love this! It makes me want to drink so much beer all day every day!

Here's my labeling! I put some lines in the background that are varying shades of the amber color in the beer glass! I also put it on some of the sides of the beer carrier. I gave him plenty of options so he could decide for himself.

It just took me five minutes to do proper alignment. I am now very grumpy and frustrated! This is the updated the layout and the type sizes and locations! YAaaaAaAAa let's see how this goesssss!

Anxiously awaiting approvals

Well I'm currently sitting on four of six approvals, which I can't say that I hate! I decided to drop Wick Folwer..as much as I loved my little chili guys, I decided it would be best to drop it..the label and characters were fine, but my poster series just was not happening for me. Instead, I'm going to try for Society of Illustrators and then obvi bottling. I'm waiting in line to talk to him now, so I hope he gives me some good feedback on how to make my labels better!

Here's some pics, yo:

I messed with the fonts and layout of these. I never actually tried folding this S of I mailer before last night, so that's a neat thing I tried since Friday.

Instead of sparkles, I tried to put in some starbursts instead. Need to figure out how to add that sparkle I promised ;) hmm...

one week left for approving ...AHHH

It's been awhile since you've heard from me, but I've been so busy just trying to get things approved! Want to see what I've got? Well if your answer is no, you can just turn around and leave

The CD is okay, but I need to mess a little with type.
This is an OK with alts. Messing with F. Scott's pikcha and the spine...and getting rid of my grey fold guides!

This isn't technically an OK, buttttttt I'm feeling very good about how far it's come! Just have to mess with the hierarchy of type..WaHhOoOoz.

This is a new thing. Society of Illustrators, but I think I've figured it out! YAYY getting to serious work. I hate how much I pushed everything off this semester.

Chili series getting wilddddd! Ignore the horrible COB on the red one, I was getting prettyyy tired at that point. AHH so many components.

Here's my bottling. Rusty didn't hate it, but he didn't love it! He wants me to get rid of the sparkles, so I'm not sure where that's headed now, but it will come together. Keeping up the optimism!

What am I doing with my life?

I need to be studying for my stat test today. It's rainy and dreary and just want to snuggle. (I almost just diary entry status, but then I remembered this is the internet and anyone can see anything). I want to nap, and I want stats to naturally just absorb into my brain...OH I FORGOT TO BLOG THIS LAST TIME!!!  I GOT TWO APPROVED YAAAAAAA

Yeppppp my food spreads are good to go! I printed one out. I'm 33.33333333333333% of the way to approvals and 25% of the way done with printing...I suppose I could print "How Safe" also, but two food spreads is a little monotonous, and I like the pink cupcakes betta than tha nachozzz.
